A Reminder for Men

The American Cancer Society1 offers the following information and recommendations concerning prostate cancer:

Risk factors for prostate cancer:

  • Being older than 50 years.
  • Being African-American.
  • Having men in your family with prostate cancer.
  • Eating foods that are high in saturated fat like red meats and high-fat dairy foods.
  • Being overweight.

Steps you can take to help prevent prostate cancer:

  • Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables each day.
  • Limit red meats like beef steak and hamburger and dairy foods like ice cream, butter or cheese.
  • Stay at the weight that is healthy for you.

Finding Prostate Cancer Early

  • Men should consider a yearly screening (prostate-specific antigen [PSA] blood test and digital rectal exam) to check for prostate cancer beginning at age 50 or at age 45 if you are at high risk (African-American or have a father or brother with prostate cancer before the age of 65).
  • Talk with your doctor about whether to have a yearly PSA blood test and digital rectal exam.
  • It is OK for you to ask your doctor questions and get the facts about preventing and finding prostate cancer.
