Horizon NJ Health Teams up with Trenton Crusade Against Cancer to Sponsor Cancer Awareness Night at the Trenton Titans Game - January 20th

Cancer Survivor, Peggy Nichols, Will Toss the First Puck

(West Trenton, NJ - January 18, 2007) - Horizon NJ Health joins the Trenton Crusade Against Cancer and the American Cancer Society in sponsoring "Cancer Awareness Night" on January 20, 2007 at the Sovereign Bank Arena. The Trenton Titans Hockey Team will take the ice with the Wheeling Nailers at 7:00 p.m. Throughout the game, the sponsoring organizations will present activities, games, a "chuck-a-puck" contest and materials that highlight the importance of cancer awareness. Mercer resident, Peggy Nichols, a cancer survivor, will have the honor of dropping the first puck for the game.

"Horizon NJ Health is indeed proud to support the Trenton Crusade Against Cancer's initiative against cancer," said Dr. Philip M. Bonaparte, Chief Medical Officer for Horizon NJ Health. "This promises to be a valuable and worthwhile evening, very enjoyable for families and a way to support and raise awareness for the participating sponsors and organizations."

Education and prevention are key to saving lives. In Mercer County, New Jersey:

  • 36 individuals are diagnosed with cancer each week
  • 14 individuals die from cancer each week

(Trenton Crusade Against Cancer- 2006 statistics from the American Cancer Society)

Marjorie Carnevale, one of the Chairpersons with the Trenton Crusade Against Cancer, noted, "The Trenton Crusade Against Cancer has a goal to reduce the unequal burden of cancer in disparate populations in the city of Trenton. According to the American Cancer Society, Trenton's population is more likely to be diagnosed at a later and less treatable stage of cancer, in particular cancers of the breast, prostate, lung/bronchus and colon/rectum. We appreciate the partners' support in expanding awareness and education, so that we can reach as many as possible in the community."

Organizations in Trenton who are partners in the Trenton Crusade Against Cancer include the American Cancer Society, The Lung Cancer Circle of Hope and Horizon NJ Health.

The Trenton Crusade Against Cancer, the American Cancer Society, The Lung Cancer Circle of Hope and Horizon NJ Health will offer educational materials, outreach and learning opportunities on cancer awareness and prevention. "NJ," the Horizon NJ Health mascot, will lead children and adults in activities to encourage everyone to move and have fun as a means to a healthier and happier lifestyle.
