All visits to a specialist must be coordinated with your primary doctor. Your doctor should give you a referral Form or a script that you will need to bring with you when you see the specialist. You do not need a referral to visit a dentist, OB-GYN, have routine eye care or get a mammogram.
Referrals help your doctor better manage your care. When your primary care provider (PCP) coordinates your care, he or she will know about all the doctors you visit. This helps your PCP make more informed treatment options for you.
