There are methods and approaches that can be utilized by providers to improve communication with patients and health literacy among members. When an appointment with a patient ends, a provider should ask a question: If you were to go home and tell a spouse, relative, or friend what you were asked by the provider to do, what would you tell them? This question should not be posed to the patient as a test of their knowledge. Rather, the provider should let the patient know that the provider is asking the patient to help evaluate the provider’s own effectiveness in communicating to the patient. This approach is known as the Teach-Back method. As well, the provider should strive to practice simple, direct English.
